Their first drone class shattered expectations: “It’s not a toy!”
On April 30, the Asia International Drone Club (AIDC) welcomed a group of curious and enthusiastic students and teachers from Harvest Experimental School in Taichung for a hands-on drone field trip they’ll never forget.
The event kicked off with thrilling demo flights by high-speed FPV racing drones and remote-controlled helicopters. With first-person-view (FPV) goggles, students got to "become the pilot" and feel the rush and speed of immersive drone flight.
“It totally changed the way I thought about drones,” one student exclaimed.
Drone Soccer: Fun, Frustrating, and Incredibly Addictive
Beyond the performances, students got their hands on the controls in an exciting round of drone soccer—a fast-paced, skill-intensive sport that tests hand-eye coordination and precision piloting.
“I thought scoring would be easy,” one student laughed,
“but I couldn’t even tell left from right!”
With step-by-step coaching from AIDC instructors and live demonstrations, students gained a new perspective on the world of drones—from military reconnaissance and freestyle flight to entertainment and esports.
"It’s Fast. It’s Loud. It’s Real."
Many students reflected on how eye-opening the experience was:
“This was my first time flying a real drone. It was hard—but so fun!”
“I used to think drones were just toys. Now I realize real drones have power, speed, and precision.”
“I want to keep learning and dive deeper into the technology behind them.”
The AIDC operations team expressed their excitement at seeing young minds light up with interest. They reaffirmed their commitment to STEM outreach and campus partnerships, aiming to help more students connect with emerging technologies and unlock their future potential.
